Beyond the Exhibition

Every time I prepare a solo exhibition with Island Gallery, I have to leave some photographs. There is only so much space on the walls and choosing what to show also means deciding what will stay behind.

This year, I spent a long period in Scotland, travelling through the Inner and Outer Hebrides and making photographs that would become part of the exhibition I’m now preparing for December: Apparizioni — あらわれ.

As soon as I arrived in Edinburgh, I headed northwest, full of hope for the journey ahead. The weather, though, had other plans. I knew Scotland was not exactly famous for sunshine, but after so many consecutive days beneath a grey, heavy sky, I have to admit I felt a little discouraged.

During those two weeks, the sun did not appear often. When it did break through the clouds, it felt like a rare jewel. I found myself appreciating those moments all the more: the brief occasions when the light revealed itself and changed the landscape before me.

That is why I chose the title Apparizioni — あらわれ for the exhibition.

As I work through the selection, there are images I still want to share, even if they won’t be on the gallery walls. Some of them will find a place here.

Apparizioni — あらわれ, my solo exhibition presented by Island Gallery, will be on view from December 1 to 6, 2026 at Kujaku Gallery in Kyobashi, Tokyo. If you’re nearby, I’d love for you to come and see the prints in person.
