A memory carried by the wind

Nearly ten years ago I was traveling in Japan with Igor Tuveri, during the production of Domenico Distilo’s documentary Manga do. One scene stayed with me: the wide beach of Shirahama, filled with koinobori—carp streamers—pulling against the wind like a quiet, colorful tide.

Yesterday, while walking in Ueno, I found them again at Toshogu Shrine. Seeing those streamers suspended in the spring air brought me straight back to that beach, to that production, to the rhythm of days spent moving and looking.

At the same time, I listened to a beautiful interview with Igort on Fahrenheit, about the new book A cavallo con i poeti (Riding with Poets). The conversation felt like another current in the same river.

This is why today I felt sharing a handful of frames from that trip, like some small notes from the road. One of these photographs also became part of the DVD production for Mangado, and it still carries the feeling of those days: the salt in the air, the wind, the long line of streamers, and a sense that memories don’t disappear, but just wait for the right light to return.
