Daimaru Tokyo Leica

Passing people

People move through the city without needing to stand out.In a profile, a back, a brief crossing, each story leaks through. What’s there isn’t staging—it’s harmony with the world around them.Lives lived in places that don’t shine give everyday life its quiet rhythm.

Big cities are never still, but they’re not always loud either. Between one destination and the next, people pass each other with practiced ease—crossing, turning, disappearing. The city is built on movement, and most of that movement leaves no trace.

For the Tokyo Daimaru chapter of Hikaranai Monotachi, I focused on that quiet current: Passing People.

I wanted to focus on a particular side of these cities: the covered arcades known as shotengai, and the underground passages. Not just places you move through, but places with a life of their own—where you can shop, get a haircut, and make your way home while avoiding the rain or the scorching sun.

I’ve never been interested in “spectacular” Tokyo. It’s everywhere already, and it doesn’t need my help. I photograph the Tokyo that continues, day after day, without asking to be photographed—the one you start noticing only when you’ve lived here long enough.

The M10 helps me stay inside that rhythm. Manual focus, one frame at a time—choosing a little friction over automation, while still keeping a few digital perks. I want to feel the decision instead of outsourcing it to the camera’s idea of what matters.

Big cities like Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka teach you that most stories happen while you are on the way to something else. People cross, turn, disappear, and the city keeps moving as if nothing happened. That is the point.

If you’re near Tokyo Station, this chapter of the exhibition is there at walking speed.

Also, If you are intrigued by what not only arcades but also rural Japan has to offer, with a focus on memories and brilliant autumn foliage, Lee Chapman and I will be happy to have you on board for our Workshop:
